Gut Wisdom

Greetings!
Our most important decisions in life are made by "digesting"
information. We sit with the information we gather and connect the
mind with the body (you know, that gut feeling) and come to a
decision. Once that synchronization takes place, we can follow
through with the action necessary to bring that decision to
fruition. One that we are at ease with - one that doesn't cause a
dis-ease. (It is my opinion that this synchronicity is what true
health is.) However, if your gut is clogged with artificial food
stuffs day after day, year after year, does this eat away at the
nerves and interfere with that gut feeling? You know the feeling in
the pit of your stomach that tells you "Yes, this is a good
decision" or "Yikes, something is wrong". Are those artificial food
stuffs causing your mind to race and body to fidget so that you
can't focus long enough to digest the information in the first place
and to make a decision best for you? Or over time will those
artificial foodstuffs contribute to artificial decisions and
creation of a false self. Do you remember being sent to your room as
a kid? Whether they realized it or not, that was our parents' way to
teach us how to develop our gut wisdom. For sitting in that room
alone with our thoughts and that feeling in the pit of your stomach
was often more horrific than the reprimand itself. It was also a
time to go through the full array of emotions like anger and sadness
which eventually lead us to reflection and redirection. The
experience and lesson learned often became a foundation layer of our
belief system. Alas, when children are sent to their room today,
many don't get to develop that gut wisdom because that inner voice
is dulled out by ipods, cellphones, computers, tvs which boast images
and messages from the media. That feeling in the pit of their
stomach is usually drowned out by guzzling down a red bull and
chowing down on doritos. Does that help them circumvent the process?
It may seem to but their natural instincts may get buried. Before
you know it, acts of self- sabatoge may arise like yelling and
screaming or acts of binging, overeating and overdrinking. Living in
a fast paced world, leaves many with no time to connect to that gut
wisdom that comes out of that feeling in the pit of your stomach..
And when that happens we find ourselves relying on images and health
claims from the media rather than what is truly right for us. By
doing this we bring a disconnection between mind and body. So when
it comes to decisions on what to eat, we are now left to rely on
calorie counts that have suddenly arrived on menus. Our gut decision
will be based on numbers instead of quality. Will we soon be picking
our friends and careers shortsightedly by their dress size and
salary instead of the satisfaction they each will bring to us? Why
not have menus list the ingredients so you know what your getting?
Calorie counts on menus are similar to purchasing a book by the
number of pages it contains rather than what's inside. Many may not
be aware that chemically treated foods and refined foods like white
flour and high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils as well as
caffeinated and sugary beverages, all stress the adrenal glands.
Those little beauties right above the kidneys. Overtime this can
cause anxiety, high blood pressure, increased respiratory rate and
fluctuation in weight. Including healthful foods in the form of
whole grains, vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts, to name a few, into
your daily diet and taking a few deep breaths before eating may be
one way to restore true health. Connecting the mind and body and
restoring gut wisdom may help you to lead a more grounded, satisfied
life. If this newsletter connected with you, please feel free to
forward it to a friend or family member who may benefit by it.
Please consider joining in on some of the upcoming events or contact
me for an individual consultation. Stay well, Andrea Tortorella, HHC
